Smile Makeover Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells that Dr. Unger places over the fronts of your teeth, improving their overall appearance.

What can veneers correct?

Veneers can correct a host of issues, including:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Chips
  • Spacing issues
  • Misalignments

Veneers can even add length to teeth that are worn down.

It’s important to note that veneers cover up imperfections, but they don’t correct them. If you have a tooth that’s severely misaligned or rotated, you may need stronger measures to correct the problem structurally.

How do veneers work?

During your initial visit with Dr. Unger, he takes impressions of your teeth and discusses your goals. Once you settle on a plan, he ships the information off to lab that custom manufacturers your veneers. The lab uses porcelain because of it durability and translucence, which mimics natural teeth very well.

If you’ve chosen standard veneers, Dr. Unger prepares your teeth by scraping off some enamel in order to make room for the the new fronts. It’s important to note that this process is irreversible, so you need to always have veneers to protect your teeth. This rarely poses a problem since most people want their smile makeovers to last a lifetime.

Once your custom veneers arrive, Dr. Unger simply bonds them into place, and makes any necessary tweaks to ensure you get the smile you want.

If you’ve chosen Lumineers®, in most cases, the shells are so thin (two millimeters) that Dr. Unger doesn’t need to grind your teeth down to accommodate them. He simply “cements” them in place without the need for drilling or filing.

How long do veneers last?

If you take good care of your veneers, they can last 20 years or more. Veneers stain just like your teeth underneath, so to protect your new white teeth, you should:

  • Brush twice daily
  • Floss and rinse once daily
  • Avoid foods and drinks that stain

When it comes to a smile makeover, veneers can provide you with a clean slate. If you’d like to find out whether you’re a good candidate for veneers, call Unlimited Dentistry or use the online scheduling tool to book an appointment.
