What better way to start the new year than with a beautiful, confident smile? Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and when you know your teeth look great, it’s easy to feel good about yourself and about the impression you’re making at work, in social settings and pretty much everywhere else. Of course, few of us are gifted with a naturally perfect smile. Fortunately, there are solutions that can help each of us enjoy better-looking teeth. At Unlimited Dentistry, we offer plenty of options, including popular porcelain veneers, designed to help men and women of all ages put their best smiles forward.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are super-thin covers that are adhered to the front surfaces of your teeth. Because they can be custom shaped and tinted to match your other teeth, they’re a popular option for anyone who wants to get a more perfect smile in just a couple of office visits.
Today’s porcelain veneers are made using advanced technology and durable materials for a completely natural look. One of the reasons why porcelain veneers are so popular is because they’re also amazingly versatile. At Unlimited Dentistry, Dr. Unger uses veneers to correct the appearance of:
- Crooked teeth.
- Gaps between teeth or teeth that are unevenly spaced.
- Teeth that look too small.
- Teeth that are deeply stained.
- Chipped or worn teeth.
- Teeth with tiny cracks or fissures.
Depending on the issue that’s being fixed, veneers may also help strengthen damaged teeth and improve your bite balance, which means they're not just an investment in the way your smile looks, but also an investment in better oral health.
How are veneers applied?
Porcelain veneers are made on a patient-by-patient basis for a completely custom fit and natural look, and they typically can be applied in just two visits. That means you won't have to wait months for your new, beautiful smile. During the first office visit, Dr. Unger prepares your tooth surface by removing a very small amount of the tooth material. Removing just a tiny bit of tooth material means your new veneer will be level with the surfaces of your neighboring teeth so it blends in perfectly.
Once Dr. Unger prepares the tooth surface, he’ll take an impression of your tooth to serve as a mold for your new veneer. The veneer will be made in a dental lab that specializes in top-quality veneer restorations. Before the end of your first visit, Dr. Unger will make a temporary veneer and place it on your tooth. The temporary veneer will protect your tooth and also make sure it blends in with your other teeth while you're waiting for your permanent veneer.
At the second visit, Dr. Unger will remove your temporary veneer and carefully clean the surface of your tooth. Then he'll apply a very strong adhesive before placing the veneer on your tooth. A final buffing ensures your veneer looks and feels great.
Caring for your new veneers
One of the best things about veneers: They’re really easy to care for. In fact, you can care for your veneers just like you care for your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing and routine checkups with Dr. Unger. With proper care, your porcelain veneers can last a decade or more.
One more tip: Since porcelain can’t be whitened, it’s a good idea to schedule a professional whitening treatment before having your veneers applied. That way, your new veneers will match your teeth when they look their best, and if you need whitening in the future, your veneers will continue to match your natural teeth.
